How far back
can you remember?

Some of my oldest
memories

- Tripping and hurting my knee on my way to nursery

- My first day at school seated in the KG class looking for my mummy at
the door.

- Evening walks to the Gateway of India, eating Joy Ice Cream,
boiled groundnuts, and feeling the hot exhaust from the basement of the Taj
Mahal Hotel.

- Trying to pull Santa's beard at the X'Mas Tree (for children of Taj
staff) in the Taj Ballroom.

- Crying on the stairs on my 5th birthday because I didn't want one boy
(Marku) at my party

-  Playing in the corridor of Mandlik House with Mathew, Murli,
Savio, Sunil, Kayoz and dreading if the ball went into Louis' house.

- Getting my picture clicked in a studio dressed in my school uniform,
holding my blue bag with "C.Vaz" inscribed by my mummy.

- Eating Champion Oats for breakfast

- Talking back to the radio, thinking I'll be heard.

- Being hand fed lunch by Mathew's mom

- Eating "Chooha ki lendi" (sugar coated aniseed) from
Amritlal Stores

- Listening to my surrogate dad play the mouth organ.

- Hearing my dad sing "You are my Sunshine" to me almost
every other day.

- Reciting the rosary after an evening bath

- Going for horse rides to the Cooperage Bandstand

- Believing that I was bought from Chowpatty beach (opp Purandare Hospital, where I  later learnt
I was born).

- Hearing a priest offer to adopt me in a children's home and my mother
refusing.

- Recording nursery rhymes, "Miss Molly had
a..." on a cassette recorder...

It's all feels as if it were yesterday.

Everytime I look at this photograph of Mathew, Murli and me.

(I'm at the extreme left)

I must've been all of 5 years old.

And that was 36 years ago!

Hope you have pressed the rewind and play in your mind too.

Hey wow that was nice, certainly sets
my memory rolling, coincidentally I had been thinking of my childhood,
recalling that the earliest birthday I remembered was my 7th ( all this
reminiscing was happening becoz my daughter turned 7 today!)

Those moments are the one we can never
forget, just need some time to recall, and magic is, by recalling them we
also started smiling.

thought 1 - i remember things way back
to when i was under 3...thought 2 - is the pic deliberately blurred to
protect identity? or is it a bad scan?...thought 3 - heck! you look younger
than you are!....
